Greece is experiencing a continuous rise in fruit and vegetable prices, despite government claims of reduced inflation. According to Eurostat, inflation in the country is increasing, while in other European nations, it is declining. Greek citizens are starting to accept high prices as an unavoidable reality.
On-street markets in Attica, the situation remains challenging. Pensioners and low-income individuals are complaining that food prices are becoming increasingly unaffordable. The current prices for fruits and vegetables in these markets are as follows:
- - Peaches and apricots — €1.80/kg
- - Nectarines — €1.90/kg
- - Grapes — €2-2.50/kg
- - Melons — €1/kg
- - Watermelons — €0.50/kg
- - Tomatoes — €1-1.30/kg
- - Cucumbers — €0.90-1.30/kg
- - Aubergines — €1.50/kg
- - Squash — €1/kg
- - Beans — €3.50/kg
Producers warn that prices could rise even further in the fall due to weather conditions that have already led to product shortages. Greeks are bracing for a difficult winter as food prices continue to climb.
