In recent months, Russian consumers have faced a sharp increase in banana prices. According to the Association of Producers and Suppliers of Food Products ("Rusprodsoyuz"), retail prices for bananas have risen by 31.2% over the past year, reaching $1.6 per kilogram.
D. Vostrikov, Executive Director of Rusprodsoyuz, attributes this surge to higher producer prices in Ecuador, which traditionally accounts for over 95% of banana imports to Russia. Additionally, increased logistics costs have contributed to the price hike.
To mitigate the situation, Vostrikov suggested considering an increase in banana imports from Guatemala, which could serve as an alternative source given the high prices and reduced production in other exporting countries.
