Miguel Ferreira, manager of Mangos del Cielo:

"We are very excited about the Irwin mango campaign, which will continue throughout September"

The mango harvest has already started in Spain with the Irwin variety. "A very good season was expected this year after the average/low production of 2023. There was a very abundant flowering, but during the fruit set, which took place at the end of April/beginning of May, the minimum temperatures were lower than desired and, as a result, all mango varieties suffered plenty of losses," says Miguel Ferreira, manager of Mangos del Cielo.

"The trees of most other mango varieties, such as the Keith, Kent, Osteen or Ataulfo, will discard that fruit, but in the case of the Irwin, those small-sized mangoes will ripen as extra-sweet mini-mangoes. Over the years, these have, in fact, found their place in the market and are in demand. At Mangos del Cielo, we market them under the name of Cielitos."

"Despite the higher percentage of Cielitos, we don't think it's going to be a bad year for the Irwin and we are very excited about the ongoing campaign, which will continue throughout September while the Osteen, Kent, Keith and Ataulfo harvests begin."

"The Ataulfo is a fiberless mango variety originating from Mexico with an intense yellow colour, a soft, buttery flesh and a spectacular taste. Mexico is the world's largest producer of this type
of mango, which is mainly exported to the United States," says Miguel. "In Europe it is still not very well known. European consumers still think of mangoes as a red-coloured fruit, and that is why the Ataulfo needs some promotional work in that market. However, it is a delicious, high quality fruit and we believe that, little by little, it will become better known and more widely consumed."

"We again want to offer consumers one of the tastiest mangoes grown in the Spanish season"
In 1993, Miguel's father, who was passionate about agriculture, bought the farm where Mangos del Cielo is currently located. At the time, not much was known about mango cultivation, but after learning about it and tasting the fruit grown by a friend, who had some trees planted in the area, he decided to devote the farm to mango cultivation. "The idea of dedicating the farm to mangoes excited him from the get-go," says Miguel. "At that time, it was not easy to find mango plants in the nurseries, nor was there much knowledge about the varieties available, but little by little and over time, we grew and planted the right varieties, until we had a significant production."

"We were taking our fruit to the cooperatives and we saw that the demand for Spanish mangoes was increasing, so in 2013, I decided to leave my job and move from Madrid to Motril to dedicate myself fully to mangoes and market our production directly, managing every step of the process ourselves so that our clients could get the best mangoes. That's when we founded Mangos del Cielo."

"Since then, the number of trees in our fields has almost doubled. We now have 30,000 and are specialized in the Irwin mango. We are delivering an excellent product to the tropical fruit market, and this year we will once again offer consumers one of the most delicious mangoes grown in the Spanish season."
