The pear sector in Italy is going through a difficult period. Production of the Abate variety is very low and Dutch and Belgian companies have already registered a trademark for this variety (Abate NL) and plan to reach a thousand hectares in a few years.
Italian summer varieties such as Carmen should not be overlooked in this context. "This year's Carmen pears are really beautiful and very interesting from an organoleptic point of view. Unfortunately, they arrived at a very inconvenient time: hot weather, residues of Abate, Packam and Forelle pears throughout Europe that had not been discarded, and this meant that these summer pears did not find enough space on the shelves. As a result, prices fluctuated, especially on the general markets, forcing operators to stockpile the product," says Ettore Ceccarelli of Ceccarelli Giulio, which owns the Julius brand.
"The production per hectare of Italian pears in the remaining orchards is acceptable this year and we will be able to supply European consumers with our excellent quality."
"We're happy with this harvest, but we're afraid about getting carried away. The lack of pears from the southern hemisphere, the last pears from the Netherlands being delivered or sold to the industry, the presence of Conference pears in Spanish cellars, make me say that consumption is changing and that we must pay attention to the taste of the pears that end up on the consumer's table."
