Vietnam sees surge in fruit export revenues due to new market access

Vietnam's fruit export revenue reached 4.63 billion USD in the first eight months of 2024, marking a 30.6% increase from the previous year, driven by the entry into several key markets. The fruit sector in Vietnam has seen positive developments this year, with pomelos making their way into the Republic of Korea, and fresh coconuts and frozen durians beginning official exports to China. The inclusion of these products in international markets has broadened the spectrum of Vietnamese fruit exports, enhancing their value.

Durian, renowned as the "king of fruits," has been a major contributor to this growth, with revenues hitting approximately 1.7 billion USD in the first seven months, representing 41% of the total fruit export revenue. The export of frozen durian alone is expected to generate 400-500 million USD this year, with predictions of it joining the "billion-USD" club by 2025.

Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Phung Duc Tien highlighted the benefits of exporting frozen durian, including product diversification and value addition. Similarly, Doan Thu Giang from Vinh Khang JSC emphasized the company's readiness to export frozen durian. Dang Phuc Nguyen from the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association pointed out that exporting frozen durian would help in balancing production, stabilizing prices, and increasing income for stakeholders.

In 2023, China's importation of fresh and frozen durian stood at nearly 6.7 billion USD and over 1 billion USD, respectively. The formal export of frozen durian to China is seen as an opportunity for Vietnamese entities to enhance their infrastructural and technological capabilities. Nguyen also mentioned the necessity for authorities to establish national standards for fresh and frozen durian exports to ensure quality control.
