The second half of August was marked by adverse weather phenomena that caused damage to 25,500 hectares of insured crops in Spain, mainly to the citrus, wine grape, and fruit sectors. The damage, mostly caused by hailstorms, has mainly impacted Catalonia, Murcia, the Valencian Community, and the Castilian-La Macha province of Albacete. Compensation for these damages is estimated at about 20 million euros, according to information provided by Agroseguro to Efeagro.
According to Agroseguro sources, since mid-August, there have been recurrent storms of varying intensity throughout the country after a cold front caused most of the damage between August 12 and 16. The weather issues have affected 8,150 hectares of wine grapes, 2,670 hectares of citrus, and 1,000 hectares of fruit trees.
The adverse weather conditions affected 1,300 hectares in Catalonia, causing significant damage in the fruit-growing area of Lleida, even though many plots had already been harvested. Producers also reported damage in almond trees and olive groves. More than 2,000 hectares in the Valencian Community were affected, mainly of citrus and kaki crops. 3,000 hectares in Murcia, almost exclusively of citrus crops, were affected. In Albacete, the cold drop affected more than 2,700 hectares, mainly damaging wine grapes and some vegetable crops.
