According to the General Department of Vietnam Customs, Vietnam's durian exports are experiencing increased demand in several international markets, including China, Thailand, Japan, Cambodia, the Republic of Korea, and Papua New Guinea. In the first seven months of this year, durian exports generated over US$1.6 billion, marking a 50% increase from the previous year. China remains the leading importer, accounting for US$1.47 billion of the total imports, followed by Thailand with US$65 million, and Hong Kong (China) with nearly US$19 million. Other markets such as the Republic of Korea, Papua New Guinea, Japan, and Cambodia have also seen notable increases in durian imports from Vietnam.
Dang Phuc Nguyen, secretary-general of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association (Vinafruit), highlighted the competitive advantages of Vietnamese durians, including continuous production and reduced logistics costs, especially for the Chinese market. The signing of a protocol between Vietnam and China in August 2024 for the export of frozen durians is expected to further boost the industry. Last year, Vietnam's fresh durian exports reached approximately 500,000 tonnes, valued at US$2.3 billion, with China being the destination for 90% of these exports.
