Mike Glas, Glass Groenten:

"When salaries are deposited, people buy more expensive vegetables"

Due to the wet spring, the supply of Brussels sprouts and kale came a bit later on some plots this year. "Because of the wetness, we planted late and we are now experiencing the after-effects of that. There are not large numbers yet, but the first actions are now underway and this is also bringing demand back on track. Promotions are making many consumers aware that the vegetables are available again," observes Mike Glas of Glas Groenten in Broek op Langedijk.

However, according to the trader, the demand for these vegetables remains very weather-dependent, especially in September. "Now that we have some cooler weather, the demand from supermarkets as well as wholesalers and exporters is picking up immediately, but if it gets warmer again next week, the demand could just collapse again." In doing so, he also notices differences between certain times of the month. "When the salaries have been deposited, many people buy more expensive vegetables again, are you three weeks further on then we are back in with our relatively cheap vegetables."

In addition to sprouts and kale as main products, Glas Groenten currently packs a wide range of outdoor products such as wax carrots, white and red cabbage, pointed cabbage, swedes, beetroot, and bottle pumpkins. "I do expect sales to be fairly similar to last year, only I think prices will be a bit higher. Costs have gone up considerably. Many buyers want PlanetProof. That's all possible too, but this does reduce the options with plant protection products and increase the risk of pests, and that comes at a price!"
