Rains to improve the quality of walnuts in Moldova

The heavy rains that fell in some areas at the beginning of the month have accelerated the ripening process of walnuts, creating a favourable situation for the 2024 crop and bringing forward the harvest season in Moldova, according to Oleg Tîrsînă, President of the walnut growers association of Moldova.

In previous years, when late August and early September were dry and hot in Moldova, the green husk would not crack or detach, drying out on the fruit. This led to the need for more thorough post-harvest processing. Additionally, the risk of mold forming inside the walnut shell increased.

This year, thanks to the rains, the mass harvesting of early walnut varieties (such as "Pesciansky") is expected to start on schedule, closer to the usual time. According to Tîrsînă's observations, the quality of the 2024 walnut crop will be higher than last year's.
