Vietnam's fruit export revenue reached 4.63 billion USD in the initial eight months of 2024, marking a 30.6% increase from the previous year, attributed to the entry into several key markets. The fruit sector in Vietnam has witnessed a series of advancements with pomelos making their way into the Republic of Korea, and fresh coconuts along with frozen durians beginning official exports to China. The introduction of these fruits into new markets has enhanced the diversity of export products and markets, contributing to the added value of Vietnamese fruits and predicting a stronger growth trajectory for the industry.
Durian, referred to as the "king of fruits," has been a major revenue generator, with earnings of approximately 1.7 billion USD in the first seven months, representing 41% of the total fruit export revenue. The export of frozen durian alone is expected to generate 400-500 million USD this year, with projections placing it in the "billion-USD" club by 2025. The Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Phung Duc Tien, emphasized the significance of frozen durian exports in diversifying products and enhancing value. Similarly, Doan Thu Giang from Vinh Khang JSC highlighted the company's readiness to export frozen durian products.
Dang Phuc Nguyen, the Secretary General of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, noted that exporting frozen durian could help in balancing production, stabilizing prices, and increasing income for farmers and businesses. In 2023, China's importation of fresh and frozen durian stood at nearly 6.7 billion USD and over 1 billion USD respectively. The move to officially export frozen durian to China offers Vietnamese entities opportunities to invest in necessary infrastructure and technology. Nguyen also called for the swift establishment of national standards for fresh and frozen durian exports to ensure accurate and objective quality control.
