Jenny Ghiddi from "Domenico Laghi di Forlì"

"We will start selling our persimmons from Romagna in a couple of weeks' time"

"The persimmon season has been positive so far. Grades are interesting and we are starting to take orders, as sales will start in early October," reports Jenny Ghiddi, owner of 'Domenico Laghi' in Forlì. Harvesting operations in Romagna will start in late September/early October and everything is now ready to make a forecast.

"As far as we are concerned, volumes are up compared to 2023, when the weather damaged a lot of produce. Things have gone well so far, although we are keeping our fingers crossed for the rain that should fall before Thursday September 19th. If we overcome this obstacle, we can be optimistic."

The drop in temperatures of the past few days is beneficial to the quality of the fruit, which was negatively affected by the drought and excessively high temperatures in summer.

"Quality is also looking excellent, which will favor sales not only in the Italian big retail chains, but also in the foreign markets of very demanding countries such as Switzerland and Austria," echoes foreign trade representative Mirco Zoffoli.

Massimo Laghi, one of the company's 50 growers, is also optimistic. "It is necessary to be professional and adjust irrigation and nutrition well. Persimmons are looking good at the moment and we are hoping they will survive the next bout of bad weather."

The company's goal is to exceed 1,500 tonnes of marketed product. The catalogue includes not only Tipo Romagnolo persimmons, but also Rosso Brillante.

The Forlì company processes fruits in the warehouse by hand to preserve quality. "The traditional packaging solution is the open tray, but we are equipped for all customer needs. For example, trays with 4 fruits are among the most popular types nowadays," concludes Jenny Ghiddi.
