Kantar has unveiled its ranking of the fruit and vegetables most popular with the French in the summer of 2024, based on the quantities purchased over the two summer months. Which are the top 3?
Fruit: the melon takes first place
Number 1: It is the melon that is the big winner, remaining unchallenged with 76,500 tons sold in the summer of 2024. Highly appreciated for its freshness and versatility, it is still a staple of summer meals, although slightly down (-1.7%) compared to the previous summer. Whether it is consumed in a salad, as a starter, in a hot or cold dish, two thirds of French households buy it.
Number 2: Bananas come second with 63,700 tons purchased. This fruit, which is eaten all year round, has seen a significant increase in popularity this summer, with a notable rise of 10% compared to 2023. Two thirds of French households buy bananas.
Number 3: Nectarines come third, completing the podium with 43,700 tons purchased. This represents an increase of 2.3% from the previous year, confirming the popularity of this seasonal fruit among French consumers during this period.
Vegetables: the tomato reigns supreme this summer
Number 1: The tomato retains its status as France's favorite vegetable. With 113,800 tons sold this summer, it dominates the rankings, recording an increase of 3.4% from last year. A must-have for summer salads, the tomato has established itself as the king of summer vegetables. Almost 90% of French households buy them!
Number 2: The potato comes in second place, with a total of 80,800 tons sold this summer. Although still very popular, this vegetable saw a slight drop (-0.7%), compared with 2023. However, its place in the French's eating habits remains solid.
Number 3: The cucumber completes the podium, with 40,300 tons bought, marking a strong increase of +7.8%. Being fresh and light, cucumbers have won over consumers, confirming their role as an essential part of summer meals.
Other fruit and vegetables complete the ranking, including zucchinis (4th place), with an increase of 8.8% and a total of 35,900 tons bought this summer, as well as peaches with 42,400 tons sold.
