Phillipines received 2,000 metric tonnes of imported yellow onions

In response to a shortfall, the Philippines has received at least 2,000 metric tons of imported yellow onions, aimed at stabilizing market prices. Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. disclosed this development during a forum with the Makati City Business Club, highlighting the issuance of necessary permits for the importation. This initiative is expected to extend through the end of the year to meet demand.

According to a draft memorandum from the Bureau of Plant and Industry (BPI) in August, the existing stock of fresh red onions was reported at 135,551.40 MT, projected to satisfy local demand until March 2025. Conversely, yellow onion stocks stood at 3,296.50 MT, only sufficient until 25 August, prompting the approval for importing 16,000 MT of yellow onions. The BPI has also indicated that sanitary and phytosanitary import clearances will be granted for these imports, especially considering the anticipated rise in demand over the holiday season.

Current inventories, as of 9 August, show red onions at 99,512.10 MT and yellow onions at 1,624.31 MT. Retail prices for local red onions range from P75 to P150 per kilo, and yellow onions from P100 to P150 per kilo, as per the latest data from the Department of Agriculture.
