More than 75 percent of U.S. pistachios are exported

Demand for US pistachios continue to grow globally as bearing acres and quality increases throughout the industry. Considered an on year, 2023 offered exceptional growing conditions with adequate water availability, optimal weather conditions, and low pest pressure. Handlers have been able to process a record crop and exceed consumer demand for high quality.

Carryover from the 2022/2023 inventory was 163 million pounds with 110 million pounds of open inshell. Combined with the 2023 crop of 1.492 billion pounds, gross inventory totaled 1.65 billion pounds to start the new crop year.

Shipments for the 2023/2024 crop year have hit an all-time high, totaling 1,181,059,020 pounds. Of those 1.2 billion pounds, 931,018,952 pounds were exported. Exports for the year accounted for 78% of total shipments which is a six percent increase over the previous crop year. Of the export shipments open inshell accounted for 91 percent (847,814,159 lbs.), closed shell three percent (29,089,004 lbs.), shelling stock one percent (11,733,358 lbs.), and kernels five percent (42,382,431 lbs.). Domestic shipments totaled 250,040,068, which is a slight increase over the previous year.

China is top export destination
China remains the top export destination, importing more than 307 million pounds, representing 33 percent of total export shipments for the year. The top 10 export markets represented 74 percent of total export shipments totaling 685,921,907 pounds. This is the third consecutive year Turkey has a been a top global destination for US pistachios despite being a major producer. Our USMCA partners, Mexico and Canada, round out the top ten destinations for US pistachios.

China is the top export destination, followed by Germany and Turkey.

The industry will be heading into the 2024/2045 crop year with a carryover of 184 million pounds with 102 million pounds of open inshell. Harvest has started and the first reports indicate that quality is exceptional. The new crop numbers will be released in the first week of October.
