In the past two years, demand for mangosteen has doubled

For more than 50 years, mangosteen has been grown in Mexico, but only recently has the fruit witnessed a boost in demand. "We are the pioneers in growing mangosteen in the state of Chiapas and are only one of a few companies that is vertically integrated in mangosteen," says Rebecca Garcia with Cabefruit. Due to the presence of different climatic zones in Chiapas, mangosteen from this region is available year-round and the company has been able to supply customers with steady volume for many years.

Nutritional value
Mangosteen as well as rambutan, another valued product for Cabefruit, have never been as common as regular fruit items. However, social media has been creating excitement for the exotics category and consumers are increasingly curious to try out new things. Both mangosteen and rambutan are big hits on TikTok and Instagram. In addition, consumers are increasingly aware of the nutritional value and health benefits of these items. Mangosteen is very rich in antioxidants and vitamins. Some studies have even shown that mangosteen can inhibit the growth of various types of cancer cells.

The combination of consumer awareness and social media exposure has resulted in demand for these two exotics getting a boost. "This year, U.S. demand for mangosteen has doubled from two years ago," said Garcia. While part of production volume used to stay in the domestic Mexican market, nowadays all product is brought into the U.S. to meet the high demand. Although the primary customer base is still Asian, supermarkets throughout the country are becoming increasingly interested in carrying mangosteen and rambutan, making them more accessible to the entire population.

IFPA Atlanta
Next month, Cabefruit will be exhibiting at IFPA's Global Produce & Floral Show in Atlanta. "The show hasn't been held in Atlanta for a long time and because it returns to a different market, we are very much looking forward to meeting new potential customers," Garcia said.
