First deliveries of green lemons to the market

The harvesting and sales of green lemons (Primofiore, which can be sold when their color turns light green) started last week at Pado Srl, but demand is already lively thanks to the low volumes available from the southern hemisphere.

"The campaign started around 10 days earlier than usual thanks to the mild climate during the flowering phase, and should continue for about a month before making way for yellow lemons (Primofiore) and the Navelina VCR and Fukumoto oranges," explains Domenico Papaianni (pictured below), owner of the company, now in its third generation.

"The first deliveries of green lemons reached the Rimini, Verona and Macerata markets. The produce is packaged with leaves in single-layer crates. Volumes will increase as early as this week, so we will be able to meet all requests from central and northern Italy. Yields are not dropping. Demand is high, with more than satisfactory prices. The main characteristics of this fruit are its smooth edible skin, zero post-harvesting treatments, good acidity, intense aroma and a juice content exceeding 30%.

Pado grows 13 premium varieties of early and late citrus fruits including 4 lemon varieties, 4 blond orange varieties, as well as late clementines, late tarocco oranges and limes. The annual production is of around 1,200 tonnes, with an annual harvesting calendar spanning 10 months.

"Since 2010, we have modernized the company's processes by setting up numerous facilities with remote management, water saving and energy self-sufficiency in mind. We support modern agriculture that respects the environment, beneficial insects and bees: 0% glyphosate, 0% post-harvest treatments, 0% residue, 100% edible peel, 100% solar green energy. We are increasingly aware of how much the taste experience can become the main factor in end-consumer satisfaction, that is why we strive to improve our fruit day after day, minimizing treatments and naturally increasing soil fertility and regeneration."
