Iranaian kiwifruit season kicks off

Iranian kiwis are coming onto the market, announces Hadi Mirzaei, CEO of Darya Noosh Payab Trading. According to the exporter, international demand is currently strong for kiwifruit.

"Our kiwis are now ready for export. It's very good timing, as there aren't many kiwis on the markets at the moment and demand couldn't be higher," the exporter says.

The present campaign is marked by a drop in volumes, due to less rainfall, but the exporter is reassuring: "Quality is very good, even more, consistent than last season, and despite the drop in volumes, there are enough kiwis for all markets."

"As far as I can see, demand is higher than last year in all markets. This is driving up prices compared with last season. And it has to be said that transport costs are currently outrageous. I hope that prices will calm down as the campaign progresses," Mirzaei says.

The Indian market is particularly dynamic, according to the exporter, who adds: "A few exporters manage to deliver to India because of import procedures and the need to obtain special authorizations. It therefore takes time to deliver to India, but demand is strong for Iranian exporters who comply with these regulations."

Traditionally, the biggest destinations for Iranian kiwifruit are Russia, CIS countries, India, and the United Arab Emirates. Mirzaei adds, "We're looking forward to exporting to Saudi Arabia since it's a very dynamic, big, and respected market."

"Despite the current strong demand for kiwis, we are aware that we have to deal with several challenges," Mirzaei says. "On the one hand, the Red Sea crisis and the situation in the region will persist. On the other, the cost of freight is rising at a breakneck pace and could simply kill the market."
