The supply of avocados is tighter at the moment. "We've had rain in Mexico from Hurricane John and that delayed and limited harvest for three days," says Calavo Growers Inc.'s Peter Shore, adding that this week also had a one-day holiday in Mexico. "So the supply is somewhat limited because of those factors."
However, by the week's end, Shore anticipates that there will be good volume of avocados coming in from Mexico, and we should begin to catch up the following week. "We are fully transitioning over to Mexico being the primary supplier of avocados," he says. "The California season is ending and the Peruvian arrivals, for the most part, the last of them have shipped to customers. It's a bit of a transitional period."
Steady avocado movement
As for the demand for avocados, it's steady. October is usually a good month for avocado movement and promotions are in place that are centered around college football.
Looking ahead in the coming weeks, the beginning of peak supplies will be coming in from Mexico which should bring promotable pricing. "We'll also see the size curve being much more normal. Last year, the size curve throughout the whole season trended towards smaller sizes–so more 70s and 84s. As we go into this season and through the season, we'll see better supplies for 48s and larger sizes," says Shore.
