India addresses soaring onion and tomato prices

In response to the recent spike in onion and tomato prices, the state government has initiated a strategy to offer these essential vegetables at reduced rates through Rythu Bazaars. The decision comes after a significant rise in prices, with onions reaching Rs 55 to Rs 70 per kilogram and tomatoes at Rs 90 per kilogram. Agriculture Minister K Atchennaidu convened with officials from the horticulture and marketing departments to assess the situation, resulting in directives to stabilize prices within Rythu Bazaars across 13 districts. Tomatoes will be priced at Rs 50 per kilogram, while onions will be available for Rs 40 to Rs 45 per kilogram. The initiative includes direct procurement of these vegetables from farmers, aiming to alleviate the price surge. Officials have outlined plans to procure 1.35 lakh kg of tomatoes and 21,000 kg of onions for distribution. "Prices of these two essential vegetables will be at the affordable range," affirmed Atchennaidu.
