In 2024, vegetable prices in Ukraine have significantly increased due to reduced production levels amid the ongoing war. The main reasons for this surge include abnormal weather conditions and a reduction in cultivated areas. The war has led to the temporary occupation of parts of the country and the destruction of infrastructure, which has diminished production capacity. Additionally, inflation and logistical issues have heavily impacted final product prices.
Potato prices have reached $0.36-0.49 per kilogram, while carrot prices have risen by 17.9%, and beetroot prices have surged by 41.5%.
Further price increases of up to 10% are expected in October. For example, the price of white cabbage may rise to $0.82 per kilogram, and onions could reach $0.41 per kilogram. The harvest of late-season crops might help stabilize prices somewhat, but overall, costs will remain high.
Apple prices saw a decline of 20.7% in September, dropping to $0.7 per kilogram. However, imported fruits like oranges, lemons, and bananas remain expensive due to complicated logistics.
Despite the challenging situation, a shortage of vegetables is not anticipated, as imports will cover any gaps. Nevertheless, prices are expected to remain high due to increased energy and transportation costs. Predicting 2025 prices is difficult due to unpredictable weather and the ongoing challenges of the war.
