Daikundi province has witnessed a notable increase in almond production this year, with over 25,000 metric tons of almonds being supplied to the market, marking an 18 percent rise compared to last year's harvest. Sayed Sultan Mousavi, from the Agriculture, Irrigation, and Livestock department in Daikundi, attributed this growth to enhanced rainfall and water availability, contrasting with previous years where drought and natural disasters led to reduced yields.
Almonds stand as a vital crop for the livelihoods of Daikundi's residents, with the province's economy heavily reliant on almond farming. Despite the challenges posed by recurring droughts, which have led to the drying up of numerous trees, this year's rainfall has slightly improved production outcomes. Farmers and traders emphasize the importance of almonds in their income, highlighting the difficulties in transportation and the lack of processing facilities within the province.
Efforts to support almond production have been made, including the distribution of saplings, quality seeds, and the provision of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. Additionally, the role of women in the almond harvest has been significant, with their contributions being crucial to the agricultural sector in Daikundi. The province is known for cultivating various almond types, with Sarbay, Kandzi, Kafmal, Sangak, and Rasa being among the most prominent.
Stakeholders have called for government intervention to improve market access for almonds, establish processing facilities, and repair infrastructure to reduce transportation costs. These measures are deemed essential for sustaining the almond industry in Daikundi and ensuring the livelihoods of its farmers and traders.
