At the 2024 New Zealand Food Awards in Auckland, the Sassy apple variety, developed by Plant and Food Research and marketed by Next Generation Apples, has been recognized in the Primary Sector category. This variety, introduced last year by Next Generation Apples—a collaboration between Golden Bay Fruit and Taylor Corp—stands out due to its unique properties. According to Vincent Arbuckle, deputy director-general of New Zealand Food Safety, the development of Sassy apples involved plant-breeding techniques aimed at achieving a crisp texture, high flavour, long storage and shelf life, novel skin and flesh colour, optimal harvest maturity, and pest and disease resistance.
He highlighted, "It is exciting to see how investment in research can lead to practical advances without sacrificing on bite or flavour." The award underscores the comprehensive excellence of Sassy apples, from research and development stages through to commercial availability. Arbuckle also remarked on the high quality of entries in the Primary Sector category, reflecting the dynamic and prosperous state of New Zealand's food and fibre sector. Among the finalists were products such as Waitoa Free Range Chicken's Thai Green Curry Flavour Kit, Good Guise Paneer, and Akaroa Salmon's Hot Smoked Mānuka Salmon Portion. The New Zealand Food Awards, hosted by Te Kunenga ki Pūrehuroa Massey University, annually celebrate the nation's food and beverage sector's innovation and excellence.
