Reports indicate that a significant portion of avocado farms in Mexico operate without legal authorization, contributing to extensive deforestation in Michoacán and Jalisco. Illegal water use and risks faced by farmers advocating for better conditions are also pressing issues.
Since its inception in 1998, Fair Trade USA has been pivotal in promoting sustainability across global supply chains. By implementing the Agricultural Production Standard, the organization ensures that farming practices do not lead to deforestation or environmental degradation and that the welfare of workers is prioritized. This approach has attracted various stakeholders in the avocado supply chain, including distributors and retailers, to seek partnership with Fair Trade USA.
Felipe Arango, interim CEO of Fair Trade USA, emphasized the organization's commitment to fostering safe and equitable working environments while protecting natural ecosystems. The certification of farms and the collaboration with entities like Whole Foods Market and Grupo Aguacatero los Cerritos exemplify the strides being made towards sustainable avocado production.
