Spirits company launches raspberry rescue in Herefordshire

In Herefordshire, Penrhos Spirits has initiated a campaign targeting fruit farms to contribute raspberries that fail to meet supermarket criteria for their Wonky Raspberry Gin production. The brand, which has a history of using 'wonky' fruit from Penrhos Farm, aims to extend this practice by incorporating raspberries from neighboring farms that might otherwise be discarded.

This effort reflects Penrhos' ongoing commitment to reducing food waste, evidenced by previous collaborations, such as with Oddbox for a Cucumber and Apple Gin crafted from rescued 'wonky' fruit. Citing a 2021 LEAF survey, Penrhos highlights that annually, up to 20% of raspberries are wasted. Through this initiative, the brand encourages farmers to contribute their surplus raspberries.

Beyond its sustainable sourcing practices, Penrhos has also transitioned to 100% recycled aluminium bottles in 2023, aiming for a refillable, recyclable, and lighter packaging solution. This move aligns with similar packaging innovations adopted by other spirits brands like Turncoat Gin and Baileys, underscoring a broader industry trend towards sustainability.
