The Egyptian carrot season starts soon

The Egyptian carrot season begins in a few days. Volumes and demand are growing, and the season will be decisive for the recent industry in Egypt, according to Abdelkader Alhabouny, of the growing and exporting company Alhabouny Group.

Alhabouny says, "The season starts on October 25 and should continue beyond the usual end-of-June date, thanks to more suitable weather conditions and experience gained in farming operations. Extending the season will enable us to increase volumes of carrots, especially those of better quality. We grow the varieties Fire Wedge, Maestro, Suprano, Presto, Nanco, and Jerada. These varieties are known for their quality, and are well adapted to production conditions in Egypt."

Alhabouny recounts how the industry grew in a few years: "Five years ago, the carrot industry was not prominent in Egypt, nor was it an attractive crop for export. Carrots were grown in certain regions of Egypt to meet the needs of the local market. It wasn't until the energy crisis in Europe that Egyptian exporters began to export carrots. The sector then developed quickly and larger quantities were grown thanks to the use of modern farming and harvesting technologies. Carrot exports expanded to several markets, including Europe and Africa, rapidly making Egypt the third largest exporter of carrots to Europe."

"Since the 2022/2023 season, Egypt has become the European Union's third-largest source of carrots. Volumes reached a record 12,000 tonnes. The energy situation in Europe continues to hamper European carrot production, alongside other factors such as climate change. Demand for Egyptian carrots continues to grow," Alhabouny continues.

"We are trying to build on this circumstantial demand to develop the Egyptian carrot industry, by diversifying markets, such as the African market, which is taking more and more Egyptian carrots. We want to position ourselves as a reliable source of carrots, with stable volumes, lower prices than the competition, and better quality, which characterizes the Egyptian agricultural model in several crops."

This season, the carrots in acreage Egypt have increased, which, alongside the lengthening of the season, allows more volumes, according to Alhabouny. He concludes, "In the meantime, we are seeing that European growers are facing difficulties due to climate change. This season will be important and decisive in determining the trajectory of the industry in Egypt, establishing it as a major source. At Habony Group, we consider ourselves to be one of the most serious players in the sector, particularly when it comes to quality and compliance with destination market standards in terms of pesticides and fertilizers."
