The government has initiated the Kanda Express Train service from Nashik to Delhi with the objective of addressing the onion demand prior to Diwali. According to Consumer Affairs Secretary Nidhi Khare, this special train is set to reach the national capital on the 20th of this month, transporting 1,600 metric tonnes of onions. The consignment will then be allocated to various wholesale mandis throughout Delhi-NCR. Khare also mentioned plans to extend the Kanda Express service to Lucknow, Varanasi, and regions in the North-East.
In addition to the train service, discussions are underway with e-commerce platforms and retail chains to facilitate the retail distribution of onions. To further ease the supply, 1,000 mobile vans will be utilized to distribute subsidized onions in retail markets. Anice Joseph Chandra, Managing Director of the National Cooperative Consumers' Federation of India Limited (NCCF), in an interaction with Akashwani News, stated that this consignment could satisfy up to 50 percent of the daily onion demand in Delhi.
