Luis García, of Hortofrutícola Las Norias:

"In September and part of October we've had true mid-winter prices"

In terms of prices, the zucchini season is going really well. "The open ground season in Spain finished a little earlier, as did the seasons on the continent, and Almeria has started a little slower because the crops were planned to be harvested in November, so there has hardly been any overlap between the seasons at a time when the demand for zucchini in Europe has been very strong. In Italy, for example, there were issues with the production in the north which gave a boost to the demand from a country that would normally have its own zucchini," says Luis García, of Hortofrutícola Las Norias.

"Consequently, in September and part of October, zucchini prices have reached true mid-winter levels, with peaks of 2.30-2.50 €/kilo at origin."

"Now prices have dropped, but they remain quite high with really good sales, so the season has started really well for both zucchini producers and marketers. Moreover, quality is very good thanks to the varieties with resistance to the New Delhi virus."

"We are talking about a virus that has done a lot of damage in the past, to the point that many zucchini growers switched to other crops because of the devastation it caused," says Luis. "We are still fighting against other viruses, but the fall hasn't been very warm and this has limited the proliferation of viruses and diseases. As a result, Hortofrutícola Las Norias has been harvesting an excellent quality product."

The company has been a specialist in zucchini production since 1987 and is the largest exporter and specialist trader of green zucchini in Europe, with a production of around 40 million kilos. "We have always believed that if we only grow one product, it is because we can be very good at it. Our growers have managed to specialize in this vegetable and have trusted Las Norias not only for years, but for generations. In fact, we are proud to have been working with three different generations of zucchini growing families."

"Thanks to them, we achieve an unbeatable quality every season and the feedback from our clients in Europe is always positive. In the Netherlands, in particular, our brand Dribling is synonymous with quality and is perceived by retailers as a leader in the country," says Luis.
