J. Enrique Sanz: "This season, there will be a greater supply of certified fruit in Spanish stores"

First clementines with the seal of the PGI Cítricos Valencianos hit the shelves

The first clementines with the quality seal that confirms that their origin is the Valencian Community have started to arrive in Spanish stores. Consumers can look for the label of the PGI Cítricos Valencianos on the products sold by retailers Consum, Eroski, Caprabo and Alcampo, which are already offering the earliest varieties produced in Valencian fields with the flavor and aroma guaranteed by this seal.

"Commercially speaking, we are expecting a good season for mandarins and citrus fruits in general, because there has hardly been any overlap with the Southern Hemisphere," says José Enrique Sanz, Director of PGI Valencia Citrus. "Furthermore, according to the information we have, this season we will have more packing plants labelling citrus with the PGI seal, and thus a greater presence on the shelves of Spanish supermarkets.

"It is currently possible to purchase clementines of the Oronules and Arrufatina varieties. Their main characteristic is their flavor and they are now at their best for consumption," says José Enrique Sanz, Director of the PGI Cítricos Valencianos.

The campaign is only just starting. "From now on, we will go through the entire schedule of varieties grown in the Valencian Community. We are fortunate to be able to consume seasonal mandarins and oranges grown locally, with the right quality and flavor," says Sanz. "In a couple of weeks, we will also have the Clemenules, the most important clementine variety from the Valencian Community, both for its excellent flavor and the volume produced in our territory. It will remain available on the shelves for more than two months."

The PGI Cítricos Valencianos seal, which consumers can find on mandarins, oranges and lemons, "guarantees that the certified clementines are harvested in a staggered manner, so consumers can always buy them at their optimum point of ripeness."

The Director General of the PGI Cítricos Valencianos also says: "For the last couple of weeks, lemons of the Primofiori variety certified with our PGI seal have also become available on the shelves of retailers Masymas and Alcampo." However, he adds that orange lovers will still have to wait a little longer to be able to buy them.

"Valencia's PGI-certified orange campaign is expected to start between the second and third week of November, depending on the fruit's ripeness, to make sure consumers will be able to purchase a product with great flavor. Very good quality oranges are expected this season."
