Alberto Nocera of Agrieuropa

"We are looking forward to a promising start of the winter campaign"

"The campaign of our winter products has started and will be in full swing over the next two weeks. We are hoping for a good season, even if we are a bit worried about demand, as end consumers are being increasingly careful when doing their shopping," reports Alberto Nocera, president of Agrieuropa, based in Terracina (Latina).

As for the start of the winter product commercialisation campaign, Nocera comments that, "for those products destined to be exported, whose main destination is Germany, we have noticed increased interest only for kohlrabi, although it will only be available starting from week 47 as, while we were used to already have volumes available in the past, we have had to shift transplants this year due to the production difficulties caused by the high temperatures - as we have less and less weapons to defeat antagonist agents - and because demand usually started from mid-November when the local produce started lacking. As far as the other export items are concerned, we have started with spinach, baby spinach, lamb's lettuce, long and round turnips and we will also start with radish, bunch carrots and parsley roots in the next two weeks."

Agrieuropa is an agricultural co-operative that produces, processes and packages vegetables in the heart of Agro Pontino, in the province of Latina, in the municipalities of Terracina, San Felice Circeo, Sabaudia and Pontinia, on an area of 400 hectares, of which 303 under glass greenhouses and about 100 hectares of open fields.

During the winter vegetable campaign, Agrieuropa, in addition to the range of salads (including lamb's lettuce, spinach, baby spinach and rocket), processes courgettes, parsley roots, long turnips, round turnips, kohlrabi, radishes and carrots: all products mostly destined to be exported. The summer campaign focuses instead on courgettes (available all year round), cucumbers, watermelons and peppers.

Alberto Nocera also reports that there will be a new winter product starting from the end of November.

"Summer products such as cucumbers, peppers and horn peppers are coming to an end, though we are planning on increasing volumes for next year, as they enable us to broaden our range and guarantee continuity to our employees. Lamb's lettuce and dark courgettes are instead available all year round, despite the various difficulties that characterise each period."

Dark courgettes are available all year round at Agrieuropa but, at the end of the summer, the cooperative has introduced light courgettes with flowers, in order to extend the range for the Italian market.

"We are pleased with the commercial trend of dark courgettes. Thanks to the high prices, we were able to compensate the low production volumes occurring at this precise time of year due to viruses."

"Since late summer, we have also started producing and marketing light courgettes with flowers. We are pleased with them too, because the medium-high prices managed to compensate the low yields. The next transplants will take place in January, with harvesting from February to May."

The pepper campaign is over at Agrieuropa: "being our first year, we are pleased in terms of both production and marketing. In 2025 we will increase cultivated areas by 20%."
