The first strawberries from Basilicata reach the Emilia Romagna markets

Basilicata's strawberry season is starting early thanks to the mild autumn weather, with temperatures currently reaching 25°C. The first harvesting operations took place on Tuesday, 29 October 2024. The variety is RedSayra from the Planasa group, a rooted top type planted at the beginning of September.

"We have very limited quantities available: a few dozen small crates have been sent to the Rimini market, with starting prices at 30 €/piece (15 €/kg), grade 18-22 mm and a good brix level.

The second harvesting operations are set for next week, and we believe that we will have more volumes thanks to the other early cultivars. What surprises us every time is the enthusiasm of operators for this product, which never tires the market, especially in a commercial window where supply is almost non-existent. Strawberries are the engine that drives the local economy and other products as well, such as citrus fruits," explains Maria Ferrara of the fruit and vegetable wholesaler Fe.Vi Frutta di Policoro.

250 g punnets in 2 kg crates.

For the 2024/25 strawberry campaign, Fe.Vi Group has increased strawberry crops by 15%. "We have around 60 hectares, 40 of which of the Sabrosa-Candonga variety. The rest are destined to other varieties that have proved their worth on the production and commercial front in recent years. We have also increased our soil-less crops, from the 8 hectares of last year to the current 10, planted with the Sabrosa-Candonga variety."
