In Southport, Bernard and Joan O'Malley, the founders of Nationwide Produce PLC, have passed away at the age of 88, just days apart, after 65 years of marriage. Nationwide Produce PLC, headquartered on Lord Street in Southport, has evolved under their stewardship into a key player in the UK's produce sector, boasting a £186m turnover, operations in four countries, and a workforce of 300. The O'Malleys have been instrumental in supporting various community initiatives in Southport and beyond.
Tim O'Malley, in a statement, shared, "After a short time in hospital, my mum, Joan O'Malley, died on Friday 11th October. My dad, Bernard, followed her shortly afterward and passed away on Wednesday 30th October. They were both 88 years old and had been married for 65 years. Nationwide Produce PLC began life in September 1975 as Bernard O'Malley & Co. The 'Co' was my mum. The business turned over £311,122 in its first year and made a small profit. This last financial year, Nationwide turned over £186m from 9 offices/depots/packhouses in 4 countries employing 300 staff."
Reflecting on his parents' legacy, Tim O'Malley expressed his admiration for their dedication to the produce industry and their contributions to the company's success. "I'll miss him, I'll miss his boundless enthusiasm for the business but above all, I'll miss his advice, his pearls of wisdom," he added.
