Intermarché wants to strengthen "its commitment to food sovereignty"

French supermarkets ditch strawberries over holidays in favor of local produce

With its 56 production units and a sales outlet every 10km, the French retail organisation Mousquetaires Group has announced 8 commitments to strengthen France's food sovereignty and support the agricultural world.

Promoting seasonal French fruit and vegetables throughout the year and putting an end to the sale of strawberries and cherries during the holiday season
In order to encourage the consumption of fruit and vegetables from France, and enable everyone to eat better, Intermarché and Netto have decided to step up the promotion of seasonal fruit and vegetables produced in France throughout the year. The aim is to increase consumer demand and encourage the preference for French produce.

In addition, Intermarché and Netto will stop supplying their shops with strawberries and cherries for the holiday season (December to January), leaving more space on the shelves for seasonal fruit and vegetables produced in France. The Group is giving itself until spring 2025 to study the results of this initial experiment, before considering extending the initiative to other highly seasonal products in the years to come.

Twice as many products from local producers on the shelves: target of 20,000 by 2027
The Mousquetaires Group already partners with more than 10,000 local producers throughout France, and aims to double this figure with another 10,000 local producers, for a total of 20,000 within a 70-km radius of its shops. This will reduce the number of intermediaries, improve producers' incomes and reduce the carbon impact of transporting products.

Launch of an "Intermarché Terroir" label guaranteeing the French origin of traditional fresh produce
In order to improve the clarity of the commercial offer, better assist customers in their choices, and support Ferme France, Intermarché will be rolling out an "Intermarché Terroir" label guaranteeing 100% French sourcing on all its traditional fresh produce (butchery, fruit, vegetables...) during the first quarter of 2025.
