Alina Vasilica, of Murciana de Vegetales: "The incessant rains have slowed down the overall supply"

"At the moment, practically all European countries are getting their lettuce supply from Spain"

This year, the lettuce export season has started earlier in the Spanish Region of Murcia. European countries have already made the switch to the Spanish production, which has had some setbacks due to the abundant rainfall and the difficulty in harvesting.

"The export season for fall-winter lettuce has started significantly earlier this year. Normally we start in week 42, but this year we started in week 39," says Alina Vasilica, from the sales department of Murciana de Vegetales. "Although there are countries, such as Switzerland, that have been able to continue with their local productions for longer, at the moment, practically all European countries are already getting their supply from Spain," she says.

"The incessant rains in the last week of October and the first week of November have slowed down the harvesting, and temperature changes have caused the supply to slow down, too. Fortunately, however, our crops have not suffered too much, thanks to our high degree of specialization in lettuce cultivation and handling and our great product diversification," says Alina.

In spite of the effects of the storms on the harvest and the delays due to the transport situation, "lettuce prices are good and are trending upwards because the demand is much greater than the supply," says the sales representative from this company from Murcia. "In situations like this, we prefer waiting until the lettuce has grown to the right commercial size, rather than harvesting prematurely."

Murciana de Vegetales produces and sells lettuce all year round, although it handles the largest volumes in the fall and winter months. Its exports are mostly intended for European countries, although they also reach the Middle East, with shipments to the United Arab Emirates.
