In the Dominican Republic's Peravia province, the Punta Catalina Electric Generation Company (EGEPC) has addressed criticisms from environmental organizations regarding its influence on local agriculture. EGEPC's executive vice president, Celso Marranzini, sought an analysis from the Ministry of Agriculture to assess the situation. A report from Agriculture Minister Limbert Cruz, dated November 12, 2024, refuted the claims of adverse effects on agricultural output between 2021 and 2024, showing a 21.61% increase in crop production. Notable rises include bananas (16%), and tomatoes (10%), with stable yields of chili peppers and onions. Growth in watermelon and melon production was also noted, underscoring Peravia's agricultural productivity.
Marranzini highlighted the Ministry's report as evidence against the accusations, affirming EGEPC's dedication to environmental sustainability and community welfare. Furthermore, EGEPC undergoes annual audits by Rina Consulting, verifying its adherence to environmental standards globally and locally.
