In 2023, Peru's agricultural exports to China (excluding Taiwan and Hong Kong) were estimated at $420 million, i.e. 3% more than the previous year. The most outstanding agricultural products sent to the Asian country are blueberries, valued at $129.3 million, followed by fresh grapes ($75.3 million), fresh avocados ($65 million); algae ($42 million), tara powder ($27.7 million), in addition to other 63 products.
Angel Manero Campos, head of the Ministry of Agricultural Development and Irrigation (Midagri), said that China currently accounts for less than 5% of Peru's total agricultural exports, which in 2023 amounted to about US$10.2 billion. However, he highlighted the importance of integration with China through the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), the introduction of new agricultural and livestock products in the Chinese market, the implementation of new irrigation projects that will expand the country's agricultural frontier, and operations at the recently opened port of Chancay, which will reduce the products' transit time to China, improving the competitiveness of the Peruvian supply in the Asian market.
China is expected to become the fastest-growing market for Peruvian agro-exports in the coming years, underlining the importance of this market, Manero Campos said. "There's no doubt, we expect growth in Asia. In 10 to 15 years, shipments to China will probably account for half of Peru's agro-exports," he stated.
