Sharpak and WB Chambers launch recyclable berry packaging with 17% less weight

Sharpak has partnered with WB Chambers, a UK-based berry grower, to introduce a padless technology for berries, reducing packaging weight by 17% and enabling full recyclability through kerbside collection. This collaboration aims to improve sustainability within the fresh produce supply chain, reflecting both entities' commitment to environmentally friendly practices and the promotion of a circular economy. Sharpak's engagement with organizations like WRAP, RECOUP, and OPRL underlines their commitment to sustainable product development.

The introduction of SharpTek Technology by Sharpak, after extensive development and testing, offers a packaging solution that eliminates the need for glued absorbent pads, thus removing hundreds of tonnes of packaging waste. SharpTek's innovative design utilizes highly recyclable mono-material PET to create a soft base that protects the berries, marking a significant step in sustainable packaging. This technology has earned recognition, receiving two bronze awards at The Grocer New Product & Packaging Awards 2024.

The collaboration between Sharpak and WB Chambers has been crucial in bringing SharpTek to market, demonstrating the potential of cooperative efforts in achieving environmental and consumer benefits. Ben Norman, Commercial Manager at WB Chambers, expressed enthusiasm for the project, highlighting its alignment with sustainability objectives and the ability to maintain production efficiency without compromising fruit quality.

SharpTek's design effectively separates juices from the berries, enhancing product quality and reducing food waste. This feature supports UK retailers' goals to reduce packaging while ensuring product integrity. Berry punnets equipped with SharpTek technology are now available at major retailers, offering a recyclable packaging solution that simplifies the recycling process for consumers.

Produced at Sharpak's Aylesham site, which boasts a BRCGS AA+ rating, SharpTek represents a step forward in sustainable packaging solutions for the fresh produce industry, aligning with circular economy principles and meeting retailer and consumer demands for environmentally responsible options.
