The Jameela brand is still relatively new on the market, it launched in June this year with premium avocados from Peru.
"When the Peruvian supply ended, we started sourcing avocados from Colombia, where we experienced a few teething problems," explains Graham Povey from Premier Foods Wholesale. "We had some quality issues which proved to be quite challenging. It did work out in the end, and we have everything running smoothly from Colombia now and the Jameela brand is back on the market."
Premier Foods are receiving two containers a week from Colombia.
To keep the avocado imports going Graham and the team set up exports from Rwanda, which was a first for the company and they now have a fully functioning packhouse there. "The avocado exports from Rwanda are mainly from September to December to fill the gap whilst the fruit is scarce elsewhere."
In addition to this they have also started the export of fine beans, snap peas and mangetout from Rwanda.
"When we did our first avocado container export, it was only the second container to leave a Rwandan port. We are now shipping around 8-10 tonnes per week via air for distribution in the UK. All of our vegetables are premium quality. It has sometimes been a hard sell as Kenya is well established and well known for quality vegetables, where as Rwanda Is up and coming."
