Organic fresh produce in India, especially fruits and vegetables, has shown notable growth as part of the larger organic agriculture sector. According to a 2024 report on India's organic market, onions, potatoes, and tomatoes are the leading organic vegetables, each contributing 15% of sales within this segment. This growth reflects increasing consumer demand for pesticide-free and eco-friendly produce, particularly in urban areas where health awareness is on the rise.
India's organic fruits and vegetables category is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 18% until 2033, making it one of the fastest-expanding segments in the organic sector. This growth is fueled by supportive government initiatives, including subsidies for organic farming and streamlined certification processes. Sikkim and Uttarakhand lead in organic cultivation, with Sikkim achieving 98% organic coverage of its net sown area.
Export markets for organic fresh produce also present opportunities. India exported approximately $0.49 billion worth of organic products in 2024, with fruits and vegetables forming a significant part of this. While domestic consumption is expanding, export channels to markets like the European Union and the United States highlight India's potential as a global supplier of high-quality organic produce.
Despite these advancements, challenges persist, such as limited cold storage infrastructure and high certification costs. Addressing these barriers, along with continued focus on research and sustainable farming practices, will be crucial for maximizing the potential of organic fresh produce in both domestic and international markets.
