Osaka zookeeper accused of stealing animal food

A zookeeper at Osaka Tennoji Zoo is accused of repeatedly stealing fruits and vegetables intended for animals. The man, in his 40s and employed for over a decade, admitted to taking the food, which was meant to sustain the zoo's 1,000 animals. Authorities believe he consumed the stolen produce, but his motive remains unclear. Rising grocery prices and inflation have increased the zoo's daily food costs by ¥20,000 since 2021, adding to financial strain. Established in 1915, the zoo serves fresh, human-edible food to ensure animals accept their meals due to their keen sense of smell.
