Brazilian papaya exports rise in 2024 driven by strong European demand

Brazil's papaya exports have shown an upward trend in 2024, as per the Brazilian Fruit Growers Association (Abrafrutas) analysis of government statistics. The market acceptance of Brazilian papaya often exceeds that of local offerings, despite potential price variances.

From January to October, papaya exports reached 35.84 thousand tons, a 14.65% increase, generating $47.79 million in revenue, up 7.39% from the previous year. EspĂrito Santo led in papaya exports with 15.85 thousand tons, followed by Rio Grande do Norte and Bahia.

The National Supply Company (Conab) and the Center for Advanced Studies in Applied Economics (Cepea) have both reported favorable conditions for papaya exports, driven by high production levels and strong demand from Europe. Marcela Barbieri from Cepea noted the strong European demand for papaya, despite it being a niche market. She mentioned the price dynamics influencing the decision between local sales and exports.

Portugal, the UK, and Spain are the primary importers of Brazilian papaya. Doce Fruit, a key player in the papaya export market, has reported a high regard for Brazilian papaya among European consumers, which has positively impacted demand and sales. The company exports papaya to 15 countries, with air shipments ensuring the fruit's freshness upon arrival.

Doce Fruit is exploring expansion into new markets, including the United Arab Emirates and potentially China, pending a trade agreement. Brapex anticipates a 15% growth in papaya exports in 2024, emphasizing the trend of appreciation for Brazilian papaya on the global stage. Efforts to incorporate technology and sustainable practices have been crucial in meeting international market standards, especially in Europe, where restrictions on chemical residues are tightening.

Exporters are advised to remain vigilant with regulations to avoid product loss. Julio Alonso, a papaya importer in Madrid, highlighted the importance of working with experienced Brazilian suppliers to navigate these challenges. The popularity of Formosa papaya in Spain underscores the growing demand for Brazilian papaya in European markets.
