Ghana is poised to take advantage of the strong demand for sweet potatoes next year, thanks to a significant increase in acreage, the introduction of varieties popular in Europe, and consistent marketing efforts. This is the announcement made by Felix Kamassah, CEO of Maphlix Trust Ghana.
The grower says, "So far, we haven't taken full advantage of Ghana's strength as an origin for sweet potatoes. Egypt has been very successful in this sector in recent years, even though they have a season for sweet potatoes. In Ghana, on the other hand, we grow sweet potatoes all year round."
"We are ready to capitalize on this major asset this year. We have introduced the varieties most in demand in Europe, such as Beauregard, and other pepper flesh, white flesh, and cream flesh varieties. Acreage has increased nationally to reach 4,000 ha, of which 3,000 ha is operated by Maphlix Trust Ghana, as the largest grower nationwide. This represents a 50% increase in volume as of next year."
Traditionally, Ghanaian sweet potatoes are exported to the Netherlands, France, and the UK, according to Kamassah.
He adds, "From next year we plan to target other markets, such as Denmark, Russia, and other European countries. The market for sweet potatoes keeps growing and the need is there in several countries."
To achieve this move, Maphlix Trust Ghana will step up marketing efforts, Kamassah says. "We're taking part in major exhibitions in Europe to promote Ghana's sweet potatoes. We'll be welcoming buyers at the next edition of Fruit Logistica, where our stand will focus on this crop."
In terms of pricing, Kamassah says, "We see our average prices in 2024 increasing by 20% on the previous year, yet we remain very competitive in the market with an average price of EUR 5 per 6kg pack."
"We have the means to achieve our ambitions in this sector, with smooth logistics. Our products are delivered in a maximum of 12 days anywhere in Europe, with enough shipping lines and mastery of packaging and tuber curing," Kamassah concludes.
