In Punjab, Pakistan, the price of tomatoes has significantly increased, reaching up to Rs700 ($3.18) per kilogram in certain areas. Specifically, Sialkot reported tomato prices at Rs700 ($3.18 )per kg, while the prices in Rawalpindi and Lahore were noted at Rs400 ($1.82) and Rs300 ($1.36) per kg, respectively. This situation presents a stark contrast to the government's set price of Rs180 ($0.82) per kg.
Additionally, the region has witnessed a price increase in other vegetables as well. Potatoes, officially priced at Rs88 ($0.40) per kg, are being sold for Rs100 (approximately $0.45), and onions are available at Rs160 ($0.73) per kg. A contributing factor to the high tomato prices has been identified as their importation from abroad, coupled with supply disruptions caused by road closures during PTI protests.
