Two significant food recalls have been announced involving cucumbers and organic carrots distributed across the United States and Canada due to potential contamination risks.
SunFed cucumbers recall
SunFed Produce, LLC, based in Rio Rico, Arizona, is recalling all sizes of whole fresh American cucumbers sold between October 12 and November 26, 2024. These cucumbers, packaged in bulk cardboard containers, white boxes, or black plastic crates with the grower name "Agrotato, S.A. de C.V.," may be contaminated with Salmonella.
The recalled cucumbers were shipped to multiple U.S. states, including California, Texas, and Florida, as well as Canadian provinces like Alberta and Ontario. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) linked these cucumbers to reported salmonellosis cases from October 12 to November 15, 2024. Symptoms of Salmonella infection include fever, diarrhea, nausea, and abdominal pain. Vulnerable populations, such as young children and the elderly, face higher risks of severe complications.
SunFed has contacted its direct buyers and urges consumers to check for affected products at retail and food service outlets. No other SunFed products or suppliers are implicated in this recall.
Cal-Organic carrots recall
In a separate recall, various brands of organic carrots distributed nationally in Canada are being pulled from the market due to possible contamination with E. coli O121. Affected products, sold under brands such as Bunny-Luv and Cal-Organic, include baby-cut, petite, and juice carrots in sizes ranging from 340g to 50lb, with sales dates spanning August 14 to November 2, 2024.
This recall, originally issued on November 18, 2024, was updated to include additional products and corrections to labeling information. Symptoms of E. coli O121 infection include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, and, in rare cases, kidney failure.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is overseeing the investigation and advising consumers not to consume, use, or distribute the affected carrots.
Consumer advice
Consumers who have purchased any of these products should dispose of them immediately or return them to the point of purchase. Retailers and food service providers are advised to review inventory for the recalled items.
For further details, contact SunFed or the CFIA to verify whether purchased products are affected. Both companies stress the importance of food safety and are working closely with regulators to address the contamination risks.
