French apple varieties debut in Mumbai, highlighting sustainability and premium flavors

The Interbranch Association for Fresh French Fruit and Vegetables has initiated an endeavor to bring a diverse range of premium French apples to Mumbai, catering to the tastes of Indian fruit aficionados. Among the varieties introduced are Red Delicious, Golden Delicious, Royal Gala, Granny Smith, and the seasonally exclusive Kissabel with its distinctive red flesh. This move is part of a larger strategy aimed at integrating sustainable agricultural techniques with the introduction of superior flavors into the Indian market.

Amidst challenges such as extreme frosts in Eastern Europe affecting global apple production, France's apple yield is projected to remain stable at approximately 1.463 million tons in 2024, thanks to sustainable practices like precision irrigation and eco-friendly pest management. These practices ensure the production of high-quality apples that are environmentally benign.

An exclusive event in Mumbai on 1st December, organized by the IFBE, showcased Interfel L's range of French apples through a curated four-course menu by Chef Darius Madon from Native. The event highlighted the culinary versatility of these apples, featuring dishes such as Chilled Apple Salad and Royal Gala Cranberry Galette, emphasizing the continuous need for high-quality produce supported by sustainable farming.

Interfel, established in 1976, represents over 1,300 apple growers in France and is committed to promoting sustainability, research, and innovation in the production and distribution of fresh fruits and vegetables. With plans to engage consumers through in-store activities across major Indian supermarkets, Interfel aims to familiarize the Indian market with the unique flavors of French apples, ensuring their availability and promoting sustainable consumption.
