This week, Amapá marked a milestone by securing its first Geographical Indication (IG) in the Indication of Origin category, granted by the National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI). This achievement was spearheaded by the Porto Grande Pineapple Producers Association. Porto Grande, located 102 kilometers from Macapá, serves as the state's primary pineapple cultivation area, boasting around 12 million trees. The region's pineapple production has been celebrated through a festival since the 1990s, attracting over 60 thousand attendees annually. In addition to Porto Grande, the Bailique Archipelago was recognized for its açaí production.
In 2022, Sebrae initiated the IG application process by hiring a consultancy to organize the necessary documentation to establish Porto Grande's reputation in pineapple production, engage the community, and foster partnerships with various entities. The application was submitted to INPI in June 2023, and the recent approval endows Porto Grande's pineapple producers with a competitive edge. "It opens up new possibilities, including for tourism, which should attract the attention of visitors from the state itself and other regions of the country," remarked a spokesperson on the potential impacts of the IG designation.
