It's been a challenging season for moringa in Egypt as supply was not at the levels needed to meet the rising demand, says Mansour Ahmed, sales manager for Egyptian exporter Pure Herbs: "It was an average moringa season, with low supply and high demand. We produced about 40 tons, which is less than what we produce in previous seasons. In those seasons, production ranged from 60 to 70 tons per year. Current demand is strong, we have one specific client from the Netherlands ordering 7.5 tons, which is a significant part of our total volumes. We export our moringa leaves mostly to European markets, especially to Germany and Poland. We'd love to start shipping to South America though, reaching countries such as Venezuela and Brazil."
As a result of the lower production, the prices have gone up as the moringa season went on: "At the beginning of the season, the price ranged between 3-to-4 USD per kilo, depending on the quality of the product. During the middle of the season, prices ranged between 4-to-5 USD and by the end of the season, the price reached around 5-to-6 USD per kilo. Looking ahead, we have planted double the quantity to cover the contracts that were signed for next year, and many farmers and companies planted it in large quantities to cover the increasing demand for the moringa leaves," Ahmed concludes.
