Following a recent price hike, wholesale onion prices in Ukraine have once again declined, as reported by EastFruit analysts. This downward trend is primarily driven by a decrease in demand, with producers increasingly offering medium and low-quality vegetables.
Currently, onions are being sold at 10–16 UAH/kg ($0.24-0.38/kg), which is approximately 16% cheaper than at the end of last week. Notably, as the weekend approaches, wholesale onion prices in Ukraine are falling below last season's levels.
Sellers are compelled to reduce prices due to a significant drop in demand. Additionally, the quality of onions in storage is rapidly deteriorating, prompting owners to lower prices to stimulate sales and quickly clear out existing stocks.
It's important to note that most farmers are currently holding back from selling onions, citing extremely low prices. In early December 2023, Ukrainian producers were selling onions at prices that were on average 20% higher than today's rates.
