The mission to Senegal reserves unexpected surprises at the wholesale market

Italian apples and grapes available Dakar, but re-exported from Spain

"Many imported products can be found at the Dakar market in Senegal, mainly citrus fruits from Morocco, bananas from the Ivory Coast, and apples from South Africa. However, there is no shortage of European products," reported Renzo Piraccini, President of Macfrut, during his visit to the African country.

"We saw Greek kiwis, apple persimmons from Spain, apples from France, and apples and grapes from Italy. However, large part of the Italian produce is re-exported by Spanish operators using the new fast shipping line that connects Port-Vendres (near Perpignan) with Dakar."

The mission was organised in collaboration with the ICE office in Dakar directed by Alessandro Gerbino, and Piraccini took part in the presentation of Fieravicola to sector operators, and met with fruit and vegetable operators.

"We visited the new wholesale market in Dakar, the 'Marche d'Interet National'. It is a modern and functional facility and the only one so well organised in sub-Saharan Africa."

"Many operators, however, still prefer to do their buying and selling in the traditional market in the city, which has precarious hygienic conditions," concluded Piraccini.
