“Our packaging keeps bananas fresh for longer and is biodegradable”

Packaging that is biodegradable and keeps the bananas fresh for longer, that is what is on offer, says Dr. Ravi Sankar Ummidi, Chief Technical Officer and Co-Founder of fresh produce packaging manufacturer PeelON.inc: "Banapeel is a home-compostable packaging, designed specifically for bananas. It addresses common export challenges, like controlling the ripening, reducing spoilage, and meeting sustainability requirements. For instance, it allows bananas to stay fresh during long distance shipments, by managing ethylene levels and maintaining the right moisture balance. These features help exporters deliver high-quality produce while simplifying the logistics process."

Reducing food waste, and meeting sustainability efforts is becoming more important for the American consumer, Ummidi emphasizes. "Sustainability is a growing priority for markets in the U.S. and Europe. Banapeel is made from compostable materials, meaning it doesn't contribute to plastic waste. It also helps reduce food waste by preserving the bananas' freshness during transit. This makes it easier for exporters to meet the environmental standards expected by both regulators and buyers. Traditional packaging, like plastic bags, doesn't decompose and can harm the environment. Meanwhile, our product is biodegradable and home-compostable. It also eliminates the need for additional handling, such as changing the packaging before ripening, saving both time and effort. These small differences can make a big impact in the supply chain."

Transporting bananas over longer distances is challenging in itself, and Ummidi states that on top of being a sustainable solution, the Banapeel actually helps keeping the fruits fresh for a longer period of time: "Long transit times are a challenge for any perishable product. Banapeel helps by slowing the ripening process and keeping the bananas hydrated. This ensures they stay fresh until they reach their destination, even on extended journeys. The packaging can be adjusted to match the specific requirements of exporters, whether it's about ethylene permeability, size, or other factors. This means it can integrate smoothly into existing workflows without major disruptions."

According to Ummidi, exporters who have tested Banapeel have shared positive feedback with the company. "Clients have noticed a reduction in spoilage and improved freshness of the bananas upon arrival. Retailers, too, are responding well to the sustainable aspect, which aligns with their customers' preferences. It's a practical solution that seems to work well for everyone involved. The Banapeel packaging complies with the environmental and food safety standards required in key markets like the U.S. and Europe. This makes it easier for exporters to navigate regulatory hurdles, while also staying competitive."

"Our goal is to help industries transition to sustainable packaging, without sacrificing functionality. With Banapeel, the focus is on reducing waste, both in terms of packaging and in the product itself, while keeping the process simple for exporters. It's part of a broader effort to make the supply chain more sustainable," Ummidi concludes.
