Morocco: Association urges interior minister to ban watermelon cultivation in Zagora

The Association des Amis de l'Environnement has addressed a letter to Interior Minister Abdelouafi Laftit, urging an immediate halt to watermelon cultivation in the Zagora region. The plea comes amidst an escalating water crisis, with the region already grappling with severe water shortages.

The association highlights that the overexploitation of water resources has aggravated this crisis to sustain watermelon farming. This unsustainable practice has led to a significant exodus of residents seeking better living conditions elsewhere. Additionally, the association has commended the regions of Tinghir and Tata for their proactive decision to prohibit watermelon cultivation within their territories.
